The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) at the University of Washington seeks a top caliber researcher and teacher to join our growing and dynamic department in 2015. We are most interested in candidates whose research is outstanding in quality and originality. The specialty of the position is open, though we particularly encourage applications in the areas of Human-Centered Engineering, Human-Centered Computing, Product Design, Research-through-Design, Science & Technologies Studies, Infrastructure Studies, and Tangible & Embodied Interaction. We are also interested in candidates who engage critically with theory in their research.

Our department has a core interest in research-based approaches to design that place people at the center of activity. HCDE is an interdisciplinary community that incorporates a range of research traditions. More information about our department can be found at hcde.washington.edu.

We will consider candidates from a range of disciplinary backgrounds who use innovative methodological and theoretical approaches to address current challenges in human-centered design and engineering. We expect our new colleagues to be engaged with emerging research trends in their area(s) of expertise. The successful candidate is expected to develop a substantial program of research including peer-reviewed publications and external funding. Candidates should show evidence of strong promise in teaching as well as scholarship.

The department is seeking applicants for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position (9-month service period), although an appointment may be made at the rank of Associate Professor if circumstances and qualifications warrant. Applicants must have an earned doctorate or foreign equivalent by the date of appointment.

HCDE offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and will supervise doctoral dissertations. The yearly teaching load is three courses (one per quarter) plus supervision of research groups. Teaching opportunities will be based on our current course offerings and the individual?s areas of scholarly expertise. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant faculty conducting interdisciplinary research in human-computer interaction and the design of sociotechnical systems. Current faculty research includes work in infrastructure studies, human-computer interaction, research through design, health and behavior change, visualization, computer-supported cooperative work, crowdsourcing, computer-mediated communication, ICTD, engineering design, scientific collaboration, emerging communication technologies, and engineering education. The department is the home of dynamic, collaborative faculty labs, and faculty members regularly collaborate with colleagues in Computer Science and Engineering, the Information School, and the School of Art. Faculty members also routinely engage in research projects with affiliates from the region?s noted high-tech industry. Seattle is home to many prominent technology companies, along with a robust startup and global health community.

Position Description:The Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in the general area of advancing manufacturing.  Responsibilities include teaching and mentoring students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active research agenda and secure extramural funding in support of research activities. 

Department:The Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering (IMSE) (http://imse.utep.edu) has expertise in manufacturing, operations research, reliability and maintainability, systems engineering, supply chain management, healthcare, sustainability, human factors, and ergonomics. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering and Master of Science degrees in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Systems Engineering. The department participates in several interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in the College of Engineering (COE) and is developing an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Manufacturing Engineering. Current departmental enrollment includes 125 undergraduates and 85 graduate students. Research expenditures last year were nearly $2.8 million.

UTEP’s current manufacturing research portfolio includes topics in cyber-based manufacturing, green manufacturing, 3D printing, additive manufacturing, semi-conductor manufacturing, and materials processing.  Over the past three years, the department has experienced the fastest research expenditures growth in the COE through major grants/contracts with USDA, DoED, DHS, NSF, the City of El Paso, NIST, Fort Bliss, and LMC-Aeronautics. The increase in research expenditures indicates the IMSE faculty commitment to research in the strategic COE areas of Sustainability, Manufacturing, Infrastructure Systems, and Energy Systems. The Department is closely affiliated with the Research Institute for Manufacturing and Engineering Systems (http://rimes.utep.edu/), which has strong relationships with industrial and government partners. Additionally, the Department has ongoing collaborations with the Texas Tech University Health Science Center, local school districts, hospitals, international and national universities, and other UTEP departments.

Excellent manufacturing and analytical research facilities exist within the College (http://engineering.utep.edu).  The COE houses a class 100/1000 Nanofabrication Center for semiconductor, biomedical device, and MEMS fabrication; and the Keck Center for 3D Innovation (http://keck.utep.edu/), home to state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing technology in additive manufacturing processes, materials, and applications.  In addition to the basic and applied research at the University, the El Paso/Juarez metroplex represents a global manufacturing region that provides the opportunity for faculty to work with U.S. and international manufacturing operations in real-world industrial settings.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related area.  Applicants must demonstrate a record of scholarly activities, including publication; of attracting externally funded research; and of leadership in establishing a strong interdisciplinary research program. In addition, candidates must have a strong commitment to teaching in the undergraduate and graduate programs.

The College of Engineering and the College of Science at Purdue University have identified predictive science & engineering for decision-making in the field of material/product co-design as a strategic area for multi-disciplinary discovery and learning. We are currently accepting applications to fill multiple positions for tenure-track and tenured positions at the Assistant and Full Professor levels. The successful candidates will conduct original research, will advise graduate students, will teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, and will perform service both at the School and University levels. Candidates with experience working with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff and the ability to contribute to an inclusive climate are particularly encouraged to apply.
The ability to predict performance with quantified confidence via an optimal combination of experiments, theory and simulation is expected to lead to shorter and less costly development and certification cycles for new materials enabling material/product co-design for a wide range of applications. Purdue’s Predictive Science and Engineering initiative aims at the synergistic integration of state-of-the-art modeling and simulation, high-performance computing, uncertainty quantification, and design of experiments to achieve this goal. The effort builds on Purdue’s strengths and leverages capabilities in these areas in the Engineering and Science colleges as well as Discovery Park.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in a field of Engineering or Science related to the initiative. They should have a distinguished academic record, exceptional potential for world-class research, and a commitment to teaching and collaboration. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: i) predictive, multi-scale modeling of materials and devices including their processing and fabrication; ii) uncertainty quantification for decision-making and design of physical and computational experiments; iii) extreme-scale computing for science and engineering of materials; iv) multi-fidelity, on-demand experimentation at the material and product level. Experience or interest in multiple of these areas or related expertise is sought. Individuals with a track record and interest in cross-discipline interactions and broad impact across Engineering and Science are especially encouraged to apply.
