Michigan Technological University, a teaching and research state university located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Engineering. The successful candidate for this position will have an exciting opportunity to lead the continued growth of the College of Engineering as a national leader in engineering education and research. This site is meant to inform prospective candidates about the nature of the position and to give an overview of Michigan Tech.
The College of Engineering at Michigan Technological University presently enrolls approximately 4,000 students in 10 ABET accredited engineering degree programs and 2 science degree programs. The College is composed of 8 individual Departments including Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Engineering Fundamentals, Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering -- Engineering Mechanics. The number of bachelor degrees awarded each year typically places the College among the twenty-five largest undergraduate engineering programs in the nation (19th in 2010), while graduate enrollment has seen a rapid expansion to over 700 students. Four of the College's graduate programs were ranked in the top 50 nationwide in 2010 by U.S. News and World Report. The research & graduate programs are supported by over 30 separate research centers and institutes receiving funding from multiple federal (e.g., NSF, DoD, NIH, DOE, NASA), state, and private agencies.
The College has undergone significant growth in faculty numbers as part of a University-wide Strategic Faculty Hiring Initiative that aims to enhance the undergraduate, graduate and research programs at Michigan Tech through the creation of up to ten new faculty positions each year for ten years in strategic growth areas. Past initiatives have included Sustainability, Computational Discovery and Innovation, Energy, and Health. Future initiatives include Transportation and Water. Michigan Tech is also an ADVANCE institution, one of a limited number of universities in receipt of NSF funds in support of our commitment to increase diversity and the participation and advancement of women in STEM.
The College of Engineering at Michigan Tech is unique. For the past six consecutive years, Michigan Tech has had more Peace Corps Master's International graduate students than any other college or university in the nation. Peace Corp programs within the College of Engineering include Civil, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering. Michigan Tech and the College of Engineering is home to the distinctive Enterprise Program where teams of students work together in industry-like settings, solving real-world problems while emphasizing innovation, creativity and teamwork.
