The UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering seeks an experienced professor as the first full-time faculty member for the Graduate Program in Technology Management (GPTM) with the possibility of an appointment as the Founding Director of this Program. Applications and nominations are welcome. Candidates will be expected to pursue cutting-edge research related to technology management. This is an exciting opportunity for someone capable of providing visionary leadership and effective, team-building management of an innovative world-class program for the education of 21st-century technology managers.

Building upon our existing Technology Management Program, GPTM will be a one-year masters program that will recruit engineering, science, mathematics, management, and quantitative social science students with outstanding academic records. The goal of the program is to attract highly qualified students, mainly directly from undergraduate degree programs but also recent graduates with relevant work experience, who are interested in a career in technology and innovation management. The curriculum will be designed to deliver an integrated set of core classes and electives to build basic skills critical to technology and innovation management for both large and small entrepreneurial technology companies.

The successful GPTM Founding Director candidate will also have the responsibility to develop the curriculum, to teach in the Program, and to lead the effort to hire additional members of the faculty team. An endowed chair and a senior leadership position within the College of Engineering are available to support and empower this position and to enable the Founding Director to develop the Program most effectively.

The Program will reside within the highly regarded UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering. UC Santa Barbara is a rapidly ascending major research university that boasts a uniquely interdisciplinary culture. It is ranked 9th among the nation’s public universities by U.S. News & World Report. The College of Engineering faculty includes two of the university’s five Nobel Laureates, 17 National Academy of Engineering members, five National Academy of Sciences members, two Royal Society fellows and a recipient of the prestigious Millennium Technology Prize. Nineteen College of Engineering faculty members are among the most highly cited authors in their fields. The College’s graduates have attained senior management positions in dozens of major corporations. More than 50 College of Engineering spin-off companies have generated several hundred million dollars in merger and acquisition activity in recent years.

Qualifications of the ideal GPTM professor should include several of the following:
- Experience and leadership capabilities necessary to meet the challenges and opportunities of building a new and exciting academic program
- Outstanding credentials in academic research
- Ability to be an inspiring and rigorous instructor
- Experience at an executive level in technology management
- An interdisciplinary orientation and proven success in a major research institution
