Departmental Goals and Orientation
The goal of PSU’s Department of Environmental Science & Management is to conduct high quality research and teach effectively about the effects of and solutions to critical anthropogenic stressors to ecosystems. We provide a range of expertise across environmental stressors, including biological invasions, climate change, urbanization, pollution processes in freshwater and marine systems, and land use and habitat fragmentation. Portland State University is especially interested in how these stressors interact with the urban environment and the functioning of the social systems needed to support services provided by the surrounding ecosystems. The candidate's research would ideally link with one or more of these areas or more broadly address the general theme of managing ecosystems, communities, or populations affected by major environmental and anthropogenic stressors. It is essential that the candidate have a strong desire to work with environmental scientists in ESM on interdisciplinary scholarship around such themes. Engagement with local, regional, and national community partners in collaborative research and education is a core principle at PSU.
The PSU campus is located in downtown Portland, Oregon and is the fastest growing and most diverse institution in the Oregon University System. Portland is widely rated as one of the most livable cities in the country, with both ocean beaches and mountain ranges just over an hour drive from campus. Abundant research opportunities exist in environmental science and management, ranging from local to international levels. In addition to two Bachelor’s degree programs (Environmental Science; Environmental Studies), ESM has two masters degree programs (Master of Environmental Science;
Master of Environmental Management) and one doctoral program as part of the School of the Environment. ESM faculty have a strong record of extramural research, including cooperative agreements and ongoing research projects with several local, state, national and international organizations, such as the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.
