DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
The Pennsylvania State University seeks candidates for the Dean of the College of Engineering.
Penn State is the land-grant University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is comprised of
the University Park campus and 23 other campuses throughout the state.
Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean will lead faculty and staff
who are committed to providing extraordinary education, creating research with impact, building a
dialogue with society, and fostering a community with distinction. Established in 1896, the College
of Engineering has a rich and valued history. The College enrolls more than 9,000 undergraduate
and 1,300 graduate students, and offers some of the most comprehensive engineering programs in the
country, emphasizing technical expertise combined with innovation, leadership, teamwork,
communication skills, and a global perspective. With over $137 million in research expenditures, the
College is ranked 16th nationally in research expenditures among colleges of engineering.
The Dean is responsible for the quality of academic programs in teaching, research, and service;
strategic planning; budgeting; fund-raising; faculty and staff development; and alumni and outreach
relations. Visionary leadership, creative response to opportunities, an understanding of the multiple
missions and constituents of the College and University, an ability to inspire students and faculty to
expand their knowledge and understanding of global perspectives, a commitment to diversity, and
strong communication skills are critical selection criteria. Candidates should have significant
academic understanding of the fields of study commonly included in a college of engineering with
credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor. Prior leadership
experience with responsibility for strategic management of personnel, programs, planning, program
development, and resource allocation is essential.
