The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UMBC – University of Maryland, Baltimore County – invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position that will begin August 2016. We are searching for highly qualified candidates who will advance all aspects of the Department’s mission of research, teaching, and service, but with particular emphasis on manufacturing and materials processing in areas such as, but not limited to: biomedical manufacturing, cyber-physical manufacturing, systems to fabricate advanced materials, or wireless sensors/networks for manufacturing. The Department’s areas of research are: dynamic systems and design, thermal/fluid sciences, solid mechanics and materials science, biomechanical engineering, and engineering education. The Department and UMBC encourage multidisciplinary collaboration that advance a candidate’s career, complements the department’s research areas, and engages colleagues across the university, and external organizations and institutions.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a closely related field. A CV and a professional development plan must demonstrate potential or evidence of success: by a research plan that leads to scholarly publications and growth of an externally funded research program supporting graduate students, and by effective teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses in Mechanical Engineering. The successful candidate will have interests that align with the strategic directions of the College: addressing grand challenges and societal needs in security, health, and energy and environment; and promoting student success through innovative and effective educational programs and experiences.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering has 15 tenured/tenure track faculty members, along with full-time professors of the practice and lecturers, and adjunct faculty drawn from industry and federal labs, and offers programs leading to BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees. The Department serves over 500 undergraduates, and over 80 graduate students. More information on the Department is at http://me.umbc.edu. UMBC, recognized by US News and World Report as one of the “Up-and-Coming National Universities”, is a mid-size public research university with over 14,000 students. UMBC is dedicated to research and innovation, while providing a quality undergraduate education with honors experiences offered across disciplines.
