The Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in solid mechanics and mechanics of materials. Candidates must hold a doctorate in an appropriate field and are expected to establish an outstanding, funded research program as well as contribute fully to both undergraduate and graduate instruction. Applicants at the level of Assistant Professor are preferred but appointments at the Associate Professor level will be considered. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
We seek outstanding individuals engaged in theoretical, computational and/or experimental research with a strong interest in collaborations that combine these elements. Applicants should have solid mechanics as their core discipline. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, atomistic or molecular mechanics, large scale computation and multi-scale modeling, novel structural and materials systems, and mechanical behavior of a broad range of materials such as soft materials, biological and biomimetic materials, structural materials, and active materials. Applications consistent with traditional and emerging mechanical and aerospace engineering products, processes and systems such as lightweight vehicles, materials and structures for energy systems, smart systems, nano-scale systems, and others will be considered.
Cornell University fosters interdisciplinary research through Centers and an atmosphere of cooperation. Faculty in solid mechanics have outstanding opportunities to interact with a number of programs across the university including the Cornell Center for Materials Research, the High Energy Synchrotron Source, the Nanofabrication Facility, and the Cornell Center for a Sustainable Future, and to collaborate with colleagues across campus.
The Sibley School and the College of Engineering at Cornell embrace diversity and seek candidates who will foster a climate that attracts students of all races, nationalities and genders.
