INSTITUTION: Virginia Tech
DEPARTMENT: Civil and Environmental Engineering
POSITION: 2 Tenure Track Positions
LINK: na
NOTES:
The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions effective August 2012. One of these positions is focused towards a faculty member who will contribute to the Department's Structural Engineering and Materials (SEM) Program; the other position is focused towards a faculty member who will contribute to the broadening of the department’s focus on sustainable civil engineering infrastructure. A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely aligned field is required. The positions are anticipated to be filled at the Assistant Professor rank, however early Associate Professor level appointments may be considered for outstanding candidates. These positions are part of a multi-year, department-wide thematic cluster hire in the area of infrastructure and sustainability. Candidates with specific research expertise in resilient and sustainable civil infrastructure systems are particularly encouraged to apply. All faculty members in the CEE Department are expected to have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching as well as to specialized graduate education. Likewise, they are expected to develop a strong record of scholarly work and sponsored research. The CEE Department currently has 52 faculty members, with approximately 400 full-time graduate students and 700 undergraduate students. The Via Endowment allows the department to offer a significant number of scholarships and fellowships to highly qualified students.

A successful candidate in the area of Structural Engineering and Materials will have a sound fundamental knowledge in the area of computational mechanics with complementary strengths in one or more of the following areas: traditional or advanced material behavior, structural risk and reliability, or hazard mitigation. Exceptional candidates with expertise in other areas could also be considered. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or completion of the FE examination with plans to pursue PE registration and professional experience are desirable attributes. The SEM program at Virginia Tech includes 10 faculty and currently 90 graduate students. There are excellent laboratory and computing facilities available for structural engineering research.

A successful candidate in the area of Sustainable Civil Engineering Infrastructure will have a sound fundamental knowledge of sustainability issues as they apply broadly to civil engineering infrastructure. This faculty member will be expected to provide leadership across multiple program areas within the department as we expand our focus and concentration on sustainability. The desirable focus will be in the areas of construction, geotechnical, materials or structures, however outstanding candidates in the other areas of civil engineering, such as environmental/water resources or transportation will be considered. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate coursework focused on general sustainability topics, as well as teach in one of the more traditional areas of the field. The program area affiliation will be determined based on the successful candidate’s most appropriate alignment within the department.

Applicants are required to apply online at www.jobs.vt.edu. Those applying for the Structural Engineering and Materials position should use posting number 0110910. Those applying for the Sustainable Civil Engineering Infrastructure position should use posting number 0110927. Applicants must provide a cover letter, contact information for 3 professional references, a candidate statement discussing teaching, research, and professional goals, and a current CV. Those wishing further information about the search process may contact Professor George Filz, Faculty Search Committee Chair, Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 200 Patton Hall, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061 or at filz@vt.edu. Review of applications will begin November 15, 2011. Virginia Tech is a recipient of the National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award to increase the participation of women in academic science and engineering careers. Virginia Tech is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. The CEE Department strongly supports the Virginia Tech Principles of Community.
