The College of Engineering, (http://www.egr.msu.edu) with over 32,000 alumni throughout the world, enrolls approximately 4400 undergraduate and 900 graduate students, offering 10 undergraduate degrees and 9 graduate degrees within six disciplinary departments: Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Material Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The College has 169 tenure system faculty members and supports strong interdisciplinary research. Annual research expenditures are $53M. Research centers include: NSF Science and Technology Center in Evolutionary Science & Engineering (BEACON), USAID Global Center for Food Systems Innovation, DoE Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, DoE Energy Frontier Research Center, DoD Composite Vehicle Research Center, Composite Materials and Structures Center, Energy & Automotive Research Laboratories, Fraunhofer USA Center for Coatings and Laser Applications, Center for Engineering Education Research, and the USDOT University Transportation Center on Highway Pavement Preservation.
Our undergraduate programs are especially known for CoRe (Cornerstone Engineering / Residential Experience), which provides hands-on, team-based design to over 1300 first-year students, and engages more than 600 students in a co-curricular living-learning program with corporate support; a significant commitment to study abroad programs; opportunities for undergraduate research; capstone design courses that significantly engage corporate partners; numerous student design competitions and teams and strong support services for placement and diversity programs.
Several new initiatives are currently underway including an Institute for Engineering, Science and Health, a 120,000 sq. ft. Bioengineering Building to be completed in Summer 2015, and a growing global engineering program with a network of research partnerships on four continents.
The Dean of Engineering is the chief executive officer of the College and is responsible to the Provost and the President for the general administration of the College. The Dean provides leadership and vision in strategic planning and implementation of programs, and leads College development activities. We seek a Dean with high academic standards, an outstanding record of scholarship, a demonstrated commitment to diversity, and an ability to represent the College to local, national, and international constituencies. Candidates for the position should have an earned doctorate or the equivalent, a record consistent with appointment as Professor in a College department, relevant administrative experience, and national stature in the field of engineering.
