About the Position: Western Washington University (Western) invites
applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of
Sciences and Technology (CST). Western seeks highly qualified candidates with a
commitment to excellence in STEM education, faculty and student research, and
diversity. The Dean is the chief academic and executive officer of CST and is
responsible for providing academic leadership and administrative management for
all programs within the college. The Dean reports to the Provost/Vice President
for Academic Affairs and is a key member of the university leadership team. The
Dean works in collaboration with the faculty, staff, students, and university
administration to implement the college and university vision and mission. The
Dean is expected to be a visible leader both within the university and greater
community. It is anticipated that the Dean will assume office by August 1,
2014.
About the College: The mission of CST is to provide the highest quality
education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); to
participate in the discovery, communication and application of knowledge; to
integrate teaching, scholarly activity and service; and to maintain a diverse
college community. CST contributes a major component of the liberal arts
core at Western as well as serving undergraduate and graduate students in
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering and Design, Geology,
Mathematics, and Physics/Astronomy. CST has about 150 FTE faculty and an annual
operating budget of approximately $17 million; CST faculty generate over $2
million annually in grants and other external funding.
CST and Western collaborate with community partners to provide an exceptional
student education through close faculty-student interaction emphasizing student
scholarship and the development of innovative thinking.
In addition to strong
undergraduate majors and Master’s degree programs in traditional disciplines,
CST offers excellent learning and research opportunities in a range of special
programs including the nationally recognized Science, Mathematics and
Technology Education (SMATE) program and the Advanced Materials Science and
Engineering Center (AMSEC). Emerging initiatives include the transition from
Engineering Technology to Engineering and the multidisciplinary Institute for

Position Responsibilities: The Dean is expected to be a leader who inspires
others and fosters innovation and inclusiveness. The Dean providesacademic
leadership and is responsible for strategic planning; budget, resource, and
operations management; program development and assessment. The Dean
oversees faculty appointments, development and evaluation, including tenure and
promotion. The Dean is expected to embrace the values of a public,
comprehensive university and Western's model of shared faculty governance and
collective bargaining. TheDean collaborates with faculty, staff and students to
develop and implement the mission, vision and strategic plans for the college
and university. The Dean serves as an advocate for Western and CST, including
the development of strong connections with businesses and other organizations
in the region. The Dean is instrumental in advancing Western’s development
efforts, and specifically is responsible for fundraising in support of CST
initiatives.

nearly 15,000 undergraduate, post baccalaureate and graduate students. Western
includes seven academic colleges and a graduate school, and employs over 600
FTE faculty. Spectacularly located, the Bellingham campus overlooks the Salish
