Mississippi State University (MSU) invites applications and nominations for the position of
Dean of the James Worth Bagley College of Engineering and the Earnest W. and Mary Ann
Deavenport, Jr. Chair in Engineering. We are seeking a dynamic leader to continue to build a
tradition of excellence in teaching, research, and outreach in engineering that has a local,
national, and international impact. The Carnegie Foundation has designated MSU's status as
“Research University/Very High Activity,” and MSU has $54.8 million in NSF-reported
engineering R&D expenditures.

Mississippi State University is the flagship research university in the state with a total enrollment
of 20,138. The Bagley College of Engineering enrolls 3,780 total students: 3,194 undergraduate
and 588 graduate students. The College has approximately 200 faculty members including 18
endowed chairs and 14 professorships, with a substantial endowment near $85 million.
The Dean reports to the Provost/Executive Vice President and has curricular, budgetary, and
personnel responsibilities for eight academic departments/units including the Swalm School of
Chemical Engineering and the departments of Aerospace Engineering, Civil and Environmental
Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering,
Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The Dean also has joint
responsibility for the department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering with the Dean of
Agriculture and Life Sciences.

MSU is known for its excellence in engineering education and is expanding its programs
regionally and internationally. In the fall of 2015 the College will begin offering a new
petroleum engineering degree program on the Starkville campus. Within the next two years the
Bagley College will expand its electrical and mechanical engineering programs to the campus of
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC). These programs will be completely
MSU run. Students will be MSU students taking engineering classes taught by MSU faculty on
the MGCCC campus.

Research units with which college faculty are affiliated include but are not limited to, the Center
for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS), Center for Computational Sciences (CCS), Center for
Computer Security Research (CCSR), Geosystems Research Institute (GRI), High Performance
Computing Collaboratory (HPCC), Institute for Genomics, Biocomputing & Biotechnology
(IGBB), Northern Gulf Institute (NGI), Institute for Clean Energy Technology (ICET), Raspet
Flight Research Laboratory (RFRL), and Sustainable Energy Research Center (SERC).
Minimum requirements for the position include an earned doctorate in engineering, computer
science, or a closely related field, and credentials to qualify for the rank of professor in one of the college programs. Experience in academic administration, budget management, personnel
management, and strategic planning is expected, as well as experience with ABET accreditation.

Candidates must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills and have a demonstrated
commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, faculty development,
progressive leadership, and the ability to secure external funding, including private giving from
industry, alumni, and friends. A strong commitment to success in achieving faculty, staff, and
student diversity is also required.
