Associate Director, Center for Probing the Nanoscale, Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials

We are seeking a full-time Associate Director for the Center for Probing the Nanoscale (CPN), an NSF-funded Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC) in the Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials. The Associate Director will direct, evaluate, and evolve CPN’s educational and industrial programs and partnerships. The Associate Director will manage the day-to-day educational and outreach activities of the Center; monitor scientific operations; and work with Center PIs on stewardship of the core grant and on seeking new funding opportunities. The Associate Director will be one of two full-time staff members and, along with the Program Administrator/Financial Analyst, will be responsible for monitoring operations and will report to the Director. This is a fixed term position that will end on August 31, 2014.

Duties and Responsibilities:

40% DESIGN, DIRECT, MANAGE and EXECUTE CPN’s Educational Outreach Program.
Identify and select opportunities for educational outreach. Design content for the Education Program (having primary responsibility) and update it on an ongoing basis as the program develops. Design, direct and execute an annual week-long Summer Institute for Middle School Teachers which includes advertising, reviewing applications, communicating with applicants, planning the event and teaching. Lead CPN’s engagement in public outreach events such as Science Fairs, Bay Area Science Festival, NanoDays and others. Lead partnerships between CPN and other formal and informal science education institutions. Evaluate existing and possible educational outreach programs in terms of impact and feasibility. Decide on metrics of success and design assessment. Ensure that educational outreach programs meet exceed sponsor’s (NSF) guidelines and expectations while making sure to effectively use CPN resources. Administer assessments. Refine content on an ongoing basis.

10% Mentor CPN Fellows in Outreach Awareness and Activities.
(CPN Fellows are graduate students and possibly undergraduates and postdoctoral research associates). Get to know CPN Fellows by talking to them about their interests and their research. Recruit CPN Fellows to participate in outreach programs. Facilitate and direct the efforts of CPN Fellows to be involved in Education and Industrial Outreach programs. Organize events for CPN Fellows and lead technical discussions with CPN fellows on their research, their career plans, and the role of outreach in academia. Organize career development workshops and trips to enhance CPN fellow enrichment (events currently include Industry Field trips, Industry seminars, Work-life and ethics workshops.

10% Direct and Manage CPN’s Industrial Outreach Program.
Within the framework of interactions designed under preceding duty, maintain and make connections between Stanford and industry. Become familiar with CPN research and relate to needs of industry through meeting with industry representatives. Organize targeted workshops such as CPN’s Annual Nanoprobes Workshop.

10% Represent CPN in person.
Represent CPN in all of its aspects by 1) meeting with people from a wide range of backgrounds including the public, the K-12 education community, engineers from industry, and government officials, and 2) giving talks about CPN’s scientific research as well as CPN’s educational programs and partnerships.

15% Write CPN Proposals and Reports
Write sections of all Center proposals and annual reports. Coordinate, edit and finalize the annual report, pulling together contributions from Director, Deputy Director, Center Investigators, and Program Administrator / Financial Analyst. Respond to requests from government and other agencies to provide details of CPN activities, including research and education.

5% Develop and Maintain content for CPN webpages
Write content, including descriptions of faculty research and CPN programs. (Program Administrator leads the design and maintenance of the webpage, but adding new technical content would be Associate Director’s responsibility.). Maintain and expand if needed CPN’s teacher website.

10% Coordinate Scientific/Technical Content for CPN Events
Act as the main technical coordinator for CPN events with input into the scientific program, including the following events: the annual NSF Site Visit, academic and industrial review visits, Executive Meetings, CPN Research Theme meetings, CPN seminars and workshops.

Qualification
1. Knowledge of, and ability to explain, physical science concepts.
2. Knowledge of (or ability and interest to acquire knowledge of), and ability to explain, nanoprobe technology.
3. A passion to facilitate learning, and experience with K-12 education in some capacity, preferably including curriculum development and/or program assessment.
4.PhD in a science or engineering field is highly desired, but exceptional candidates with a Master’s or Bachelor’s will be considered.
5.Demonstrated outstanding communication and organizational skills.
6. Ability to effectively communicate with faculty, staff and students.
7.Capacity to set priorities and enact them in a fluid and fast-paced environment without regular direct intervention from center director and deputy director.
