Morgan State University, a Carnegie classified Doctoral/Research University located in northeast Baltimore,
invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for Research and Economic
Development (VPR&ED). As founding Vice President of the Office of Research and Economic Development and
as a member of the President’s cabinet, the incumbent will report directly to the President. Internal to MSU the
VPR&ED will be tasked with exhibiting leadership in the formulation and implementation of a compelling
shared vision and strategic plan to advance research and economic development. Beyond the campus, he/she
will be a leading advocate in addressing local, state, and national issues of compelling interest to the larger
research community. The VPR&ED will assume responsibility for addressing the second goal, of the MSU
Strategic Plan for 2011-2021 (www.morgan.edu/Documents/ABOUT/StrategicPlan2011-2021_Final.pdf),
entitled "Enhancing Morgan's Status as a Doctoral Research University."
Founded in 1867, Morgan State University, known for its excellence in teaching, research, effective public
service, and community engagement, is one of four public doctoral/research institutions in Maryland. Among
traditional colleges and universities, it awards the largest number of bachelor's degrees to African Americans in
the State of Maryland; and it has received more Fulbright Scholarships than any other HBCU in the nation.
Major requirements of the VPR&ED position are strong communication skills, demonstrated ability to work
collaboratively with other administrative units, and a commitment to assisting faculty in the advancement of their
research. The successful candidate will (i) possess a deep intellectual curiosity, (ii) an understanding of
and appreciation for the breadth of faculty research activities at a research university, (iii) an informed
perspective on issues such as technology transfer and intellectual property, and (iv) a proven record of
accomplishment in a research leadership position in academia, industrial, and/or the governmental R&D sectors.
Additionally, the candidate will display leadership skills and experience gained through management of major
scientific/technical programs, development of significant research based capital projects, and/or directing a
research related institute or center of excellence.
