INSTITUTION: Virginia Tech DEPARTMENT: Mechanical Engineering POSITION: Head NOTES: Nominations and applications are being solicited for the position of Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department (ME) at Virginia Tech. As one of the nation’s premier mechanical engineering departments, we seek candidates who have demonstrated intellectual leadership and management skills required to lead and further elevate the Department. Candidates must qualify for tenure at the rank of professor and should have achieved international distinction for their superior scholarship, administrative ability and leadership. Virginia Tech, a land-grant university of the Commonwealth located in Blacksburg, Virginia, has off-campus educational facilities at six regions across the State of Virginia, including the recently established Virginia Tech Research Center (VTRC) at Arlington, and campuses in four continents. The University has a total student enrollment of 30,000 with approximately 8,000 students in the College of Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering Department, which includes a Nuclear Engineering Program, offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in ME and will soon offer M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Nuclear Engineering. The Department has 59 full-time faculty members, and a current enrollment of over 1100 undergraduate and 275 graduate students. The Department includes several research centers and its faculty members are engaged in diverse multidisciplinary research activities with expenditures exceeding $17 million annually. The ME faculty also benefit from a number of university-wide institutes such as the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS). The Department is consistently ranked in the top 10% of all mechanical engineering departments in the nation in undergraduate and graduate education by U.S. News and World Report.
