Ohio State University - Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

INSTITUTION:  Ohio State University
DEPARTMENT:  Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
POSITION:  Faculty in Lightweight and Multi-Material Structures
NOTES:  Application review begins January, 2013 and continues until position is filled.

Faculty Position in Lightweight and Multi-Material Structures
Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The Ohio State University

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Ohio State University (mae.osu.edu) invites applications for a senior-level tenure-track position from individuals with expertise in the mechanical design and performance evaluation of lightweight and multi-material structures and assemblies. This position is one of three positions in a cluster hire initiative in the College of Engineering among the departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), and Integrated Systems Engineering (ISE). The faculty appointed through this cluster hire will form the intellectual core of a proposed center of excellence in materials, design, and manufacturing related to lightweight vehicle structures – automotive and aerospace – motivated by regulatory pressures for improvements in fuel economy and safety, as well as to address issues related to product complexity.
Areas of research expertise of interest for this position include, but are not restricted to: dynamics of vehicle body structures, mechanics issues related to safety/crashworthiness, nonlinear material response, modeling and experimental validation of response of multi-material structures, and mechanics of joined and multi-material structures. Metallic and non-metallic materials and their combinations are of interest, along with advanced manufacturing and joining techniques. Research leadership is implicit in this senior-level appointment and the successful applicant will be expected to have a record of accomplishment in addressing research and development issues in the areas noted above, and the underlying materials and advanced manufacturing issues.
The Strategic Plan of the College of Engineering at Ohio State holds ambitious teaching and learning objectives that enhance the overall research and discovery goals and align with major national initiatives such as the Advanced Manufacturing Program (http://engineering.osu.edu/strategic-plan). We offer a vibrant research environment at one of the largest, best equipped and best connected academic research platforms in North America. The successful candidate will be expected to complement existing design, manufacturing, and materials science strengths in the OSU science and engineering community, and to partner effectively with government, industry, and academic partners to define and build the center of excellence, and to develop significant and compelling teaching and research programs.  These new programs are expected to have strong links to industry needs and provide essential training to the next generation of practicing engineers, and thereby to have tangible impact on the discrete-part manufacturing community.
The cluster hire appointments will be made within the MAE, MSE and ISE departments. This particular position will be a majority appointment in MAE, with a minority or courtesy appointment in the other two departments. In view of our aspirations and the nature of this opportunity, we seek candidates who would work collaboratively with others, particularly the other cluster hire appointees, in education and research related to lightweight structures.
We seek a person with a demonstrated track record of leadership and collaboration in an academic and/or R&D environment, with appointment anticipated at the Associate or Full Professor level. Industrial experience and/or a record of successful collaboration with industry would be an asset. Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or in a closely related field. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain active sponsored research programs, teach core undergraduate and/or graduate courses, and develop new graduate courses related to their research expertise. The anticipated start will be August 2013. Screening of applicants will begin in early January 2013, and will continue until the position is filled. Interested candidates should upload complete curriculum vitae, separate 2-3 page statements of research and teaching goals, and the names and postal and email addresses of four references electronically at: http://www.mecheng.osu.edu/faculty_positions. Applicants with questions related to the application process may contact Cheena Srinivasan, Chairperson, Search Committee, at srinivasan.3@osu.edu.
