About the Position
Michigan Tech’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is charged with continuing to grow these successful programs and support our spirit of great innovation and discovery. The provost and vice president for academic affairs (“provost”) is chief academic officer of the University, responsible for all of Michigan Tech’s faculty and academic programs. The provost develops and implements strategic initiatives that will advance the University to the highest level of prominence. He or she promotes integrity, scholarship, and expansion of Michigan Tech’s research enterprise; guides the continuous improvement of academic programs; leads efforts to increase and enhance campus diversity; and grows graduate and undergraduate programs with a vision that stresses collaboration, collegiality, and the unity and interdisciplinary nature of education, service, scholarship, and research.
Our successful candidate is an accomplished leader and distinguished scholar with a record of vigorous support for the integration of education and research and an experienced administrator who promotes and exemplifies excellence in education, research, and outreach activities. In addition, the successful candidate demonstrates commitment to recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty, staff and student body, teamwork, and creating an inclusive campus and community environment.

Responsibilities
• Provide strong leadership in:
o Advancing the scholarly,
research and service activities of the University
o Enhancing the quality and relevance of Michigan Tech’s undergraduate educational programs
o Supporting and promoting undergraduate co-curricular learning activities and student participation in research
o Promoting growth and quality of the graduate programs
o Sustaining and enhancing efforts to recruit, develop, and retain a talented and diverse faculty and staff
o Identifying and supporting initiatives to increase and enhance diversity, inclusion and engagement across the campus
o Implementing professional development programs for all academic administrators, faculty, and staff
o Enhancing the quality and relevance of Michigan Tech’s undergraduate educational programs
o Supporting and promoting undergraduate co-curricular learning activities and student participation in research
o Promoting growth and quality of the graduate programs
o Sustaining and enhancing efforts to recruit, develop, and retain a talented and diverse faculty and staff
o Identifying and supporting initiatives to increase and enhance diversity, inclusion and engagement across the campus
o Implementing professional development programs for all academic administrators, faculty, and staff
• Plan, implement, and
responsibly administer the academic budget
• Pursue new programs and academic areas in alignment with the University Strategic Plan and lead the academic units toward achieving their strategic goals
• Play a key role in long--range planning for the University
• Recommend faculty appointment, tenure and promotion
• Ensure continued accreditation of all academic programs
• Implementing and supporting information technology resources across campus
• Support the strategic direction of the William G. Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning and of the Pavlis Honors College
• Assure the quality of the J.R. VanPelt and Opie Library resources and services for the use of the university community
• Participates in shared governance through interaction with the University Senate
• Interacts directly with the Board of Control Academic Affairs Committee
• Advise the president on matters related to the responsibilities of the office
• Perform effectively as a member of the University Executive Team
• Other responsibilities as assigned by the President
Desirable Qualifications & Attributes
• Successful administrative leadership experience in higher education, including faculty and staff personnel issues and the management of complex budgets
• Earned doctorate or terminal degree
• Achievement of the rank of professor with tenure at an educational institution
• Experience in developing, allocating, and reallocating resources to achieve strategic University goals
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen and respond effectively
• Eagerness to build strong working relationships with colleagues in all areas of the institution and readiness to use an open style of communication that builds trust and mutual respect
• Effective skills for communication and interaction with diverse internal and external stakeholders
• Deftness, diplomacy, and decisiveness, with the ability to lead complex deliberations and bring them to a timely conclusion
• Commitment to recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty, staff, and student body
• Commitment to encouraging and rewarding innovative pedagogical research and practice
• Commitment to safety and to formal continuous improvement practices
