POSITION: Tenure-Track Faculty Position
LINK: http://www.jobs.vt.edu
NOTES:
The
Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at
Virginia Tech invites applications for two tenure-track faculty position
effective August 2013. One of these positions is focused towards a
faculty member who will contribute to the Department's Environmental and Water
Resources Engineering (EWRE) Program; the other position is focused towards a
faculty member who will contribute to the broadening of the department’s focus
on sustainable civil engineering infrastructure with a specific focus on coastal
sustainability related to sea-level rise and storm water issues with associated
geotechnical engineering issues. A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a
closely aligned field is required for both positions. The positions are
anticipated to be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor rank, however early
Associate Professor level appointments may be considered for outstanding
candidates. These positions are part of a multi-year, department-wide thematic
cluster hire in the area of infrastructure and sustainability. All
faculty members in the CEE Department are expected to have a strong commitment
to undergraduate teaching as well as to specialized graduate education.
Likewise, they are expected to develop a strong record of scholarly work and
sponsored research. The CEE Department currently has 53 faculty members,
with approximately 400 full-time graduate students and 500 undergraduate
students. The Via Endowment allows the department to offer a significant
number of scholarships and fellowships to highly qualified students.
A successful candidate in the area of Environmental and Water
Resources Engineering will have a sound fundamental knowledge in the area of biological treatment and
environmental biotechnology, while also demonstrating success in translating
these skills to addressing key issues in water sustainability. Expertise
in the application of molecular biological tools to environmental systems will
be highly desirable as this has been identified as a cross-cutting need for
collaboration across several on-going projects led by EWRE faculty members. Exceptional candidates with expertise in other areas
could also be considered. Applicants are required to apply online at www.jobs.vt.edu and should use posting number
0122255 for the EWRE position.
A successful candidate for the interdisciplinary water
resources/geotechnical position will have an academic background in the general
area of water resources engineering or geotechnical engineering. The specific
thrust area will be a
unique interdisciplinary focus on the nexus between coastal hazards stemming
from sea-level rise and storm water issues with associated geotechnical
engineering issues. Desired
expertise is in one or more of the following areas: coastal wave dynamics,
ports and harbors, coastal and hydraulic structures, wave-structure-soil
interactions, and foundations in coastal areas. The CEE department has
strong faculty expertise in coastal hazards from both the water resources and geotechnical
areas. Adding this interdisciplinary position will add to the strength of
these groups with this important focus. Applicants are required to apply
online at www.jobs.vt.edu and should use posting number 0122260 for the
coastal hazards position.
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or completion of the
FE examination with plans to pursue PE registration, and professional
experience are desirable, but not required, attributes for both
positions. Applicants
must provide a cover letter, contact information for 3 professional references,
a candidate statement discussing teaching, research, and professional goals,
and a current CV. Those wishing further information about the search
process may contact Dr. Amy Pruden, Faculty Search Committee Chair, Charles E.
Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 200 Patton Hall,
Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061 or at apruden@vt.edu. Review of applications
will begin November 1, 2012. Virginia Tech is a recipient of the National
Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award to increase the
participation of women in academic science and engineering careers. Virginia
Tech is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. The CEE
Department strongly supports the Virginia Tech Principles of Community.
