The Division of Science & Environmental Policy (SEP) at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level to begin in fall 2015. We seek applicants with a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research, interdisciplinary research on wildlife interactions across wild, urban, and agricultural interfaces, and a record of successful research grant proposal writing. The successful candidate will work with other faculty to develop undergraduate curricula and professional outreach programs that leverage our unique location on California's Central Coast and in the Salinas Valley region.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and teach courses in zoology, wildlife biology, bioethics, vertebrate natural history and evolution, or lower division and non-majors biology. 
  • Employ innovative teaching and learning techniques that engage students through the use of technology, hands on experience, and problem solving;
  • Develop and maintain a research program that provides opportunities for undergraduates, including involving students in identifying, sampling, handling, and tagging vertebrates.
  • Pursue and obtain extramural funding to support an active research program that builds on assets in the Salinas Valley region; and
  • Sustain scholarly research in wildlife biology leading to publications and professional visibility.
QUALIFICATIONS
(MINIMUM)
  • Ph.D. in wildlife biology, terrestrial animal behavior, vertebrate biology, zoology, or related field at time of hire.
  • Demonstrated excellence in biology instruction and commitment to undergraduate education.
  • Expertise in wildlife biology.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Success in obtaining permits to sample/tag/collect vertebrates, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS
(DESIRABLE)
  • Interest in wildlife interactions across wild, urban, and agricultural interfaces.
  • Research interests that leverage CSUMB's ideal location on the Central Coast and in California's Salinas Valley region.
  • Interest in evaluating the relationship between wildlife and food safety in regional agricultural context, or in evaluating the health and populations of area vertebrates in general.
  • Research and teaching interests and expertise that complement and strengthen those of existing faculty in the department.
  • Strong interest in teaching an upper division course in wildlife biology, vertebrate natural history and evolution, as well as courses in bioethics and research design.
  • Strong interest in contributing to lower division biology education.
  • Specific experience mentoring student research and/or internships.
  • Demonstrated ability and desire to mentor and teach students from diverse cultural, ethnic, educational, and economic backgrounds.
  • Record of external funding and writing grant proposals.
