POSITIONAssistant Professor of Chemistry
We seek applicants with a demonstrated commitment to teaching lower division General Chemistry lecture and lab as well as upper-division analytical or environmental chemistry and/or biogeochemistry.  Candidates with background and research interests in chemistry education, environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, or agrochemical fate in the environment are particularly encouraged to apply.    The successful candidate will work with other faculty to develop undergraduate curricula, pursue collaborative research, and help develop professional outreach programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Teach lecture and laboratory sections in General Chemistry as well as upper-division lecture/lab course(s) in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, and/or organic chemistry, depending on area of expertise.
  • Employ innovative teaching and learning techniques that engage students and facilitate the development of higher-order problem-solving skills as well as the ability to apply content to real-world problems.
  • Develop and maintain an environmental chemistry research program that provides research opportunities for undergraduates.
  • Sustain scholarly research in environmental chemistry and/or science education leading to publication and professional visibility.
QUALIFICATIONS
(MINIMUM)
  • Ph.D. in chemistry or closely related field.
  • Research and teaching experience in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students from diverse educational and socioeconomic background.
  • Expertise in environmental or analytical chemistry.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
QUALIFICATIONS
(DESIRABLE)
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate student research and/or internships.
  • Proven ability and desire to mentor and teach students from diverse cultural, ethic, and educational, and economic backgrounds.
  • Environmental Chemistry research and teaching expertise that complements and strengthens that of existing faculty in the division and that serves regional needs such as Salinas Valley agriculture or water quality or water supply issues. 
  • Record of external funding and writing grant proposals.
