Department of Engineering Physics
The Department of Engineering Physics at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in Dayton, Ohio is seeking applicants for a tenure track position in Nuclear Engineering. The high caliber of our students, the quality of our research facilities, and level of faculty support provide outstanding opportunities for new faculty to develop highly successful research programs.
Position Description
Applicants are sought for a position in Nuclear Engineering. The position is at the Assistant Professor level. Interested candidates must have a PhD in Nuclear Engineering or in a closely related field. The areas of specialization of particular need include:
• Nuclear Weapons Effects
• Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons
• The History, Strategy, and Policy of Nuclear Weapons in the US
Applicant Qualifications
Applicants must have an earned doctorate in nuclear engineering, or a closely related discipline. They must be committed to excellence in the graduate-level education, to include teaching and research mentorship. They must be able to establish sponsored research projects or, as a research team member, expand upon existing projects within the department. Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor should have a strong potential for both teaching and research. Applicants must be United States citizens and currently hold or be able to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
About the Department of Engineering Physics
The Department of Engineering Physics (ENP) provides Department of Defense (DOD)-focused graduate education and research through Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in Applied Physics, Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction (M.S. only), Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering, and Optical Sciences and Engineering. We also offer graduate certificate programs in Advanced Geospatial Intelligence/Synthetic Aperture Radar, Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction, and Nuclear Weapons Effects, Policy, and Proliferation. The Department of Engineering Physics is the Air Force’s primary provider of graduate education in physics and nuclear engineering. The Nuclear Engineering programs at the Master’s and PhD level are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
The ENP Department has a strong record of publication and externally funded research, with particular emphasis on defense-related issues. As a result of strong equipment funding from the Air Force, our teaching and research laboratories are extremely well equipped and state-of-the-art. All military students attend AFIT fully funded by their respective service branches. Faculty salaries are very competitive and are paid on 10-month academic year contracts with the potential for full-year funding based on obtaining summer research support.
