NOTES:

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
THE DEPARTMENT COMPUTER SCIENCE
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position for start of fall 2013. We seek candidates whose research focus is in security or big data, especially with interdisciplinary connections. Exceptional candidates in other areas will also be considered. We strongly encourage women and candidates from underserved groups to apply.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT AND COLLEGE:

UTEP's Department of Computer Science resides in the College of Engineering, which has been ranked as one of the top engineering graduate schools for Hispanics by Hispanic Business magazine over the last seven years. Computer Science is one of the leading departments in the emergence of UTEP as a Tier 1 research institution. The department leads the College of Engineering in per-capita research funding. This year two faculty members were recognized for sponsored research expenditures over one million dollars in fiscal year 2011. The department is housed in a recently completed $70M building with state-of-the-art research and education facilities.

New faculty will be expected to contribute to continued growth in the department by building an exceptional research program supported by external funding, contributing to the expansion of our Ph.D. program, and supporting the overall undergraduate and graduate curricular needs.

The department has 14 tenured/tenure-track faculty, almost 30% of whom are women, a percentage that exceeds the national average for departments of computer science. The CS faculty has an internationally distinguished record of research and national leadership in professional organizations.

The college has experienced a 25% increase in enrollment over the last five years. Computer Science has approximately 200 undergraduate, 80 master's, and 25 doctoral students. The department offers master of science degrees in Computer Science, Information Technology, and Systems Engineering-Software engineering track; and Ph.D. in Computer Science. In addition, it offers an Information Assurance Course Evaluation (IACE)-approved Certificate in Cyber-Security and has an integral role in interdisciplinary graduate programs in Computational Science and Bioinformatics. In recognition of UTEP's success in creating educational opportunities for non-traditional students, the National Science Foundation designated it as a Model Institution for Excellence, one of only six in the country.

Research and education in security and big data are strategic priorities for UTEP. The potential for research in these areas is enhanced by the university's unique location on the U.S.-Mexico border and its proximity to large national defense installations such as Fort Bliss, White Sands Missile Range, and the Border Intelligence Center. UTEP houses a DHS Center of Excellence in Border Security and Immigration and the Center for Defense Systems Research, which supports DoD-related research. UTEP is one of six Army High Performance Computing Center partners. In addition, a new Research and Academic Data Center was just completed on campus to support institutional computing needs, including high performance computing. The NSF-funded Cyber-ShARE Center of Excellence, whose facilities include a state-of-the-art visualization laboratory, is a national leader in cyber-infrastructures for information exchange and integration, and serves as an XSEDE campus champion. In addition, the Regional Cyber and Energy Security (RCES) Center, recently funded by the City of El Paso for a six-year program in cyber and energy security technologies and applications for utility infrastructure, promotes services and products in the domain with major industry and government partners. UTEP is also the lead institution for the Computing Alliance of Hispanic Serving Institutions (CAHSI), a consortium of over ten institutions that focuses on recruitment, retention, and advancement of Hispanics in computing.

ABOUT UTEP & EL PASO:

The University of Texas at El Paso is an emerging national research university at the heart of the U.S.-Mexico border region committed to the ideals of access and excellence. A leader among Hispanic-serving institutions, UTEP enrolls more than 22,000 students -- about 77 percent of them Hispanic -- and is the only doctoral research university in the nation with a student body that is a majority Mexican-American.

UTEP offers 70 bachelor's, 79 master's, and 19 doctoral programs -- with more in development. UTEP's nearly $70 million in research spending a year ranks the University among the top 200 universities in the nation; and its more than $35 million in federal research spending ranks fourth among all Texas public universities.

The center for intellectual capital in the region, UTEP awarded its 100,000th degree since its founding in 1914 at the May 2011 commencement. A major economic engine in the Paso del Norte region, UTEP generates $438 million in local business volume and contributes over 6,900 jobs and $423 million in household income. UTEP offers exciting Division I athletic programs; award-winning theater, dance, and music programs; several art galleries and a museum; and continuing and lifelong education programs open to the public.

El Paso County is a highly livable, bi-cultural community of 800,000 people that offers affordable homes and is the safest large city in the United States. Shielded by mountains on three sides, El Paso enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine annually and a dry climate, making it possible to engage in outdoor activities year-round. The city of El Paso adjoins both the state of New Mexico and the country of Mexico, making it one of the largest international communities in the world. El Paso comprises 248 square miles and is the sixth largest city in Texas and 19th largest in the United States.
