NOTES:
SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS ENGINEERING:
WATER, ENERGY and the ENVIRONMENT

School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Cornell University

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of sustainability related to water, energy and the environment. It is expected the position will be filled at an Assistant Professor or a junior Associate Professor level, but a more senior level appointment is possible. It is anticipated the successful candidate will begin in August 2012, although alternative arrangements can be made. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

We seek candidates with strong systems analysis skills that they would apply to the management or operation of sustainable environmental systems, with particular concern for energy, water quality, water quantity, ecosystem and/or other environmental issues. Applicants should have a strong technical background in several of the following systems areas: optimization, risk analysis, statistics/probability, computational science, and uncertainty quantification that they are prepared to apply to environmental problems. Applicants are also expected to have some academic background in fluid mechanics and/or environmental processes. Additional background in climate change or energy science is advantageous. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Engineering or a related area before starting the position.

Research in the area of sustainable environmental systems engineering includes addressing the challenge of managing environmental resources in light of probable impacts of changes in climate, land use, water uses (in part related to energy) and ecosystem dynamics. Examples of suitable research application areas for systems analysis methods include but are not limited to the following:

• Sustainable water quantity and water quality management.

• Environmental issues related to energy production including advanced geothermal energy systems, subsurface hydraulic fracturing and geological carbon sequestration.

• Assessing the impact of changes in climate and land use on hydrology and pollutant transport including hydrologic effects on ecosystem sustainability.

• Systems design of intelligent sensor networks for monitoring environmental/hydrologic systems in a stochastic environment.

• Interaction between renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, with hydropower operations and power system reliability

• Optimization of biomass production and biomass refineries in view of changing technologies and resource markets

The person selected for this position will also contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in the Environmental and Water Resource Systems area within the CEE School. Potential graduate courses might address Sustainability Issues, Risk Analysis, Decision Analysis, or Water Resource Systems Analysis.

The successful applicant will be expected to conduct a vigorous, funded research program. Research activities at Cornell in these areas are enhanced by the opportunity to interact with faculty and students within the Civil and Environmental Engineering School, the College of Engineering, the Johnson Graduate School of Management, and other colleges including the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, which has a number of environmentally related programs. Cross-campus interdisciplinary activity is encouraged by the Cornell Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future (ACSF).
