INSTITUTION: Mississippi State University
DEPARTMENT: Engineering
POSITION: Director of the Raspet Flight Research Laboratory
LINK: (see below)
NOTES:
Professor and Director
Raspet Flight Research Laboratory

The Bagley College of Engineering at Mississippi State University (MSU) is seeking candidates for the Director of the Raspet Flight Research Laboratory (RASPET). The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate in an engineering or related field, must have earned national recognition by a distinguished record of accomplishments in engineering education and research, and must qualify for the rank of professor. The College is especially interested in applicants who are able to contribute in meaningful ways to our continuing commitment to diversity.

The Raspet Flight Research Laboratory (RASPET) is a key research center in the Bagley College of Engineering and one of the premier university flight research facilities in the country. Established at Mississippi State University in 1948, RASPET possesses a rich heritage in the design, development, and testing of full-scale flight vehicles, both manned and unmanned, as well as advanced composites development and fabrication. More information can be found at: www.raspet.msstate.edu.

The Director reports to the Dean of the Bagley College of Engineering and is responsible for the overall administrative and fiscal aspects of RASPET. The RASPET mission of advancing airborne systems technology is accomplished through: interdisciplinary research in advanced materials, structures, systems integration, and flight testing; outreach to industry and government; and providing a rich educational environment. RASPET serves as a multi-disciplinary center acting in a synergistic manner to enhance education (graduate and undergraduate) and research with MSU's colleges, departments, and centers.

Likewise, RASPET often serves as a strategic partner for aerospace industries within the state and region, by providing leased project space and/or access to key facilities, such as autoclaves; facilitating collaborative partnerships between faculty and industry; and providing institutional support to industry partners, such as sponsoring COAs for UAV flight testing. The Director will provide leadership to RASPET to advance research related to airborne systems with three outputs: scientific publications to enhance the reputation of the University; intellectual property (patents and copyrights); and engineering means and methods that substantially impact industry.

MSU, a Carnegie Foundation Very High Research University, is a comprehensive public institution with more than 20,000 graduate and undergraduate students and nearly 1,300 full-time faculty members, located in Starkville, Mississippi. The Bagley College of Engineering has an approximate enrollment of 2,400 undergraduate and 600 graduate students. It is ranked in the top 10% nationally in research expenditures by the National Science Foundation.

The position is available beginning July 1, 2012. The screening of candidates will begin on February 1, 2012 and will continue until the position is filled. Nominations and questions should be directed to Dr. Pasquale “PC” Cinnella, Search Committee Chair (email: cinnella@ae.msstate.edu). Applications must be submitted online at www.jobs.msstate.edu/.
