The Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) is a vital component of the College of Engineering and Information Technology with almost 300 undergraduate and 45 graduate students, 12 tenure-track faculty, one full-time lecturer, and one Professor of the Practice. Current departmental research focuses on biochemical, biomedical, bioprocess, environmental, and water resources engineering. CBEE faculty members actively collaborate with researchers from the nearby institutions including the University of Maryland School of Medicine and regularly participate in major interdisciplinary research centers at UMBC, namely the Center for Advanced Sensor Technologies and the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education. In addition to departmental space and facilities, construction of a new Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building is scheduled to start in 2017 and will provide 123,000 SF of flexible and adaptable research and education spaces to support ongoing and future interdisciplinary efforts.

At the undergraduate level, the department has tracks in three areas: Traditional Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology/Bioengineering, and Environmental Engineering and Sustainability. All three tracks lead to the B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. At the graduate level, the department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering. The CBEE faculty maintains diverse, active, and successful research programs amounting to over $5 million in external research support in FY2014. UMBC is a public research university with approximately 14,000 students. The campus is located on 500 acres in the Baltimore-Washington corridor within an hour’s drive to many federal facilities including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Defense, The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The bwtech@UMBC Research and Technology Park, a 71-acre community housing over 110 companies engaged in research, entrepreneurship, and economic development, sits adjacent to the UMBC campus. BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is five minutes away, as are AMTRAK and light rail stations. UMBC’s close proximity and easy access to a wide variety of research facilities provide numerous opportunities for collaborative interdisciplinary research.
