The University of Ottawa Faculty of Engineering provides its graduates with top quality education in engineering and computer science, preparing them to practise their professions successfully to meet the ever-changing needs of society, as well as to continue learning within their discipline or to move into other related fields such as business, law or medicine. The Faculty encourages a spirit of entrepreneurship amongst its students. It strives to provide a learning environment that promotes excellence, innovation, ethical practice and responsibility toward society.
The Faculty of Engineering is composed of three departments (Chemical and Biological, Civil, and Mechanical Engineering) and of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, which offer eight undergraduate and 17 graduate academic programs. Over 115 tenured or tenure-track professors, 130 support staff, numerous part-time and adjunct professors and other contract personnel are engaged in the education of over 3,000 undergraduate students and more than 1,500 graduate students.
While the Faculty has the most graduate students and is the fastest-growing faculty in the University, it is also a leader on the research front. Excellence and diversity in research are essential to its mission and build on strong collaboration with industry and government research laboratories. Its professors, including 14 Research Chairs and members of six Research Centres and Institutes, conduct research in a broad range of interests that have an impact on many aspects of our daily lives.

Responsibilities and Challenges
As one of Canada’s leading research universities, the University of Ottawa strongly promotes graduate studies and research. The Dean must therefore oversee activities related to research and graduate studies so as further to enhance the reputation and visibility of the Faculty and the University, nationally and internationally. He or she must have the skills to motivate the University community to attain teaching and research excellence, recruit and retain the best professors and students, develop targeted, innovative research programs, and attract funding from all sources, thereby enabling the Faculty to grow in its teaching, research and outreach endeavours.
The Ideal Profile
The person we are seeking for the position of Dean must have solid university teaching and research experience, and demonstrate leadership and vision. He or she must also have extensive management skills and excellent interpersonal skills, as well as a strong command of French and English, both spoken and written. This person must be a professional engineer licensed or eligible to be licensed in Ontario.
He or she will have to develop and implement an innovative, cutting-edge strategic plan that brings people together, one based particularly on a sustained commitment to fundraising and raising the profile of the Faculty in the community. This major position is most definitely an outstanding opportunity for an experienced academic to apply his or her leadership skills.
