Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) invites applications for the position of Head of the Physics Department. The new department head will support the ongoing efforts of the faculty to enhance the national reputation of the department by building on its existing strengths, and facilitating new opportunities in both research and teaching. These include both the undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as fostering interaction with industry, and further developing interdisciplinary programs. Successful applicants will have a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field, and demonstrated abilities in academic program development and leadership, as well as excellent inter-personal skills and a commitment to foster diversity. They will also be expected to maintain active scholarly activity at a level adequate to the rank of full professor in Physics.

The Physics Department Head is responsible for the academic operations of the department, development of the Physics faculty, and for maintaining the high quality of the department's programs and facilities. The WPI Physics Department (www.wpi.edu/+physics) has undergone considerable growth in research capacity in recent years , and is well poised for further expansion. Major areas of research include Biophysics/Soft matter, Optics, Transport phenomena, Nanoscience, Medical & Health physics, Nuclear science. There are currently 89 students in the undergraduate program and 40 in the graduate (MS/Ph.D.) program, with 10 Tenure/Tenure Track Faculty and 9 Non-Tenure Track full-time faculty.

The Physics Department promotes interdisciplinary and translational research, and high quality teaching. A large part of the teaching effort in the department is directed toward the introductory physics sequence, which serves the majority of students at WPI. The Physics faculty maintainsa diverse portfolio of research with expenditures totaling $1.3 M annually from funding sources such as the NIH, NSF, DOD, American Heart Association, NRC, and private foundations. The Physics Department faculty have collaborative relationships with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, which is 2 miles from the WPI campus, as well as with many other institutions in New England area.

WPI, founded in 1865 and located one hour west of Boston, is one of the nation's oldest technological universities. WPI is a highly selective private university with an undergraduate student body of over 4,000 and 1,900 full time and part-time graduate students enrolled in more than 50 Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. programs. Its innovative project-enriched curriculum engages students and faculty in real-world problem solving, often at one of WPI's global project centers. U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks WPI among the top 100 national universities and College Factual lists WPI in the top 10 Best Engineering Schools in the U.S.

Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae, a vision statement for the department, and statements of teaching and research interests. The applicants should also submit a list of five professional reference letters, at least one addressing leadership experience, along with the other application materials via http://careers.wpi.edu.
