Two Tenure Track Assistant Professor Positions, Computer Science
We invite applications for two tenure track positions in Computer Science at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in August 2015. All areas will be considered, but we are especially interested in candidates in security and big data with emphasis on machine learning, systems, and vision/graphics/visual analytics. Exceptionally strong candidates at the Associate Professor level will be considered. Applicants must have completed or be completing a Ph.D., have demonstrated the ability to pursue a program of research, and have a strong commitment to both undergraduate and graduate teaching. Candidates will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, build and lead a team of graduate students, and obtain external research support.
CSEE is UMBC’s largest department, with 33 tenure-track faculty, 6 teaching faculty, and 14 research faculty. We currently have over 1400 undergraduate majors in two programs, Computer Science and Computer Engineering, 250 graduate students in three core programs (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering) and 150 students in graduate cybersecurity programs. The CSEE department has a diverse research portfolio with over $6M of research expenditures per year. Our location in the Baltimore-DC corridor puts us in the center of one of the largest concentrations of federal agencies and research and development centers as well as many industrial research labs. Our EE and CS Ph.D. programs were highly ranked by the 2010 NRC study for research productivity. UMBC is the lead institution in the NSF funded Industry & University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) named the Center for Hybrid Multicore Productivity (CHMPR) . Additionally, UMBC, along with Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Rice, Texas A&M, and CCNY is a member of an NSF Engineering research center named MIRTHE ( Mid-Infrared Technologies for Health and the Environment). The person hired would have a chance to work closely with the newly established NIST NCCoE FFRDC. Our faculty have strong collaborative ties with University of Maryland Medical School and Johns Hopkins University. Our faculty also includes four IEEE, and several SPIE, AIMBE, OSA, and AAAI Fellows, and six NSF Career Awardees.
In addition to our strong, traditional undergraduate Computer Science and Computer Engineering programs, we have special concentrations in cybersecurity and in game development. The department is designated as a Center of Academic Excellence in both Information Assurance Education and Research by NSA and DHS. The CSEE Department collaborates closely with he UMBC Center for Women In Technology which is dedicated to increasing the representation of women in engineering and information technology fields and helps to attract and retain women majors in our programs. UMBC’s well known Meyerhoff Scholars Program produces a large number of graduate students from underrepresented minorities. UMBC is a selective public research university categorized by the Carnegie Foundation as a research university with high research activity. This fall, for the fifth year in a row, U.S. News & World Report ranked UMBC number one among “up and coming” national universities. UMBC is a two-time winner of the U.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. UMBC was recognized in recent Chronicle of Higher Education surveys as one of only 42 “great colleges to work for.”
Applicants should submit a cover letter, a brief statement of teaching and research experience and interests, a complete CV, and three letters of recommendation at http://apply.interfolio.com/26421. See http://csee.umbc.edu/about/jobs/ for more information and the application process. Applications received by January 15, 2015 are assured full consideration, but those received later might be evaluated as long as the positions remain open. UMBC is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer and a recent recipient of a NSF ADVANCE award to promote hiring and advancement of women in science and engineering. We welcome applications from women, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
