The Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering (IMSE) at Iowa State University (ISU) invites nominations and applications for the C.G. (Turk) and Joyce A. Therkildsen Department Chair in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering. We are seeking a dynamic and innovative leader with a bold vision for the future of IMSE who shares in our mission of achieving excellence in education, research, and service through diversity.

The Chair is expected to be nationally recognized for scholarship in research, education and professional service with a commitment to quality and academic excellence, the ability to guide the department to the highest levels of research scholarship and achievement, and commitment to a broad portfolio of basic, translational and applied research. This commitment to excellence extends to the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs, with an overriding commitment to fostering an environment of inclusion and enhancing diversity in multiple dimensions. The Chair must also possess a commitment to the department’s outreach activities and interactions with external stakeholders, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to motivate others in a shared vision. The Chair will serve as an effective advocate on behalf of the department, and will work collaboratively in partnership with peers, other departments, and university administration.

Required Education and Experience:
The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D., or equivalent terminal degree, in Industrial Engineering or a closely aligned field and have an exemplary record of achievement in research, teaching, and service at a level sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured Full Professor.

Department/Program & College Description:

The IMSE department has outstanding B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs in Industrial Engineering (IE) and M.Eng. degree programs in Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering and Engineering Management. The department is nationally and internationally recognized for its research in advanced manufacturing, human factors, and operations research with research expenditures of $3.35 million in 2014. The graduate program is ranked in the top 25 in the U.S. with nearly 200 students enrolled. The highly regarded, ABET accredited undergraduate program, with enrollment of over 550 students, includes innovative coursework and a minor in sales engineering. The department’s 23 faculty members include 15 full-time tenure-stream professors and dedicated, award-winning lecturers. Their research, teaching, and outreach are enriched through collaborations with ISU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Institute of Plant Sciences, Department of Statistics, and interdisciplinary graduate program in Human Computer Interaction. External collaborations include the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute, the NSF Center for e-Design, several U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories, and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The department is centrally located on campus with over 27,000 sq. ft. of space.
