Tenure Track Positions in Aerospace Engineering

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking exceptionally qualified candidates for two full-time appointment at the assistant/associate professor level in aerospace engineering with interests in the areas of (1) aircraft stability and (2) airborne remote sensingThe faculty positions are located at the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) in Tullahoma, TN adjacent to the U.S. Air Force Arnold Engineering Development Complex. Primary consideration will be given to applicants with teaching and research interest in flight science and airborne research. Areas of particular interest to the department include, but are not limited to, (1) performance, flying and handling qualities, and advanced flight controls research, flight testing and simulation of unmanned aerial systems (UAS/UAV), inflight simulator aircraft, and variable stability aircraft; and (2) airborne LIDAR, radiometry, hyperspectral and imaging applications, proof-of-concept for future satellite-based sensors, and low altitude “ground truthing” of satellite observations.

Candidates applying for this position are expected to have a strong commitment to teaching excellence, demonstrated research capabilities that will enable the development of externally funded and internationally recognized research programs with publications in leading, scholarly journals. Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a doctorate in engineering or a related field, and show the potential to provide international leadership in research and contribute to education and diversity at the University. Candidates must have interests/expertise related to one or more of the areas listed above. Evidence of successful sponsored research development and participation is important, and a strong academic journal publication record is desirable. In addition, the successful candidates must be qualified to work on Department of Defense projects. A commercial pilot rating is preferred but not required.

Duties
Teaching at the graduate level is required, and some opportunities to teach at the undergraduate level may become available. Successful candidates will develop and promote individual sponsored research initiatives as well as participate in research teams with other faculty.  The ability to interact effectively with industry is also important. The candidate will also be expected to recruit, advise, mentor and graduate doctoral students.

Opportunities for Collaborative Research
The MABE Department has a strong upward trajectory, with 32 faculty members in Knoxville and 9 faculty members at UTSI in Tullahoma, and offers degrees at all levels in mechanical, aerospace and biomedical engineering.  For further information, see http://www.engr.utk.edu/mabe. The successful candidate will have ample opportunities to work with the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (http://www.ornl.gov), located a short distance from the University. The ORNL campus contains many unique research facilities, and a multitude of collaborative opportunities for world-class research are available and encouraged.  A newly initiated joint UT/ORNL Bredesen Center of Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education (CIRE) http://cire.utk.edu/ has been formed to leverage the strengths of both institutions to attract world-class faculty, graduate students, and research facilities. 

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is a Carnegie RU/VH institution, and the state’s comprehensive, land-grant, research institution with over 1,400 faculty and 27,000 students in 11 colleges and schools.  The College of Engineering is undergoing a period of substantial growth in both physical infrastructure and research expenditures as it seeks to become a Top-25 ranked Public Institution.  The College presently has seven departments with 160 faculty, 2,700 undergraduates and 1,000 graduate students, with an additional 22 new faculty and professor of practice positions in the College of Engineering to be filled in the coming year, 8 of which are in MABE.
